SouthGen was created out of a crisis – the closure of our local hospital, and the threat that this historic building would be demolished and redeveloped as luxury housing. At the same time, it looked like our popular library might be forced to close because its lease was coming to an end and a new home couldn’t be found. SouthGen turned this crisis into an opportunity.
We partnered with Hastoe Housing Association to buy back the closed hospital, which is now being redeveloped as affordable housing and a community hub.
SouthGen is a charitable community benefit society that is democratically run by its members (investors) on a one member – one vote basis irrespective of how many shares they own.
